What is a debt review clearance certificate?

A clearance certificate (also called Form 19) is an official document issued by a registered debt counsellor confirming that you have paid all your debt under the debt review process and can be removed from debt review.

How much does it cost?

R1,750 if you have your paid-up letters from your credit providers. You can pay it once or in 3 monthly instalments.

How long does it take to get a clearance certificate?

Meerkat processes clearance certificates within 10 working days once we receive all required documentation. The credit bureaus then remove the debt review flag, which typically takes about a month but can take up to 2 months.

Can I get cleared if I still have a home loan?

Yes. If all the other debts in your repayment plan are paid and your home loan repayments are up to date, you can still get a clearance certificate.

How long after my clearance can I apply for credit?

The debt review flag is removed from your credit profile once the credit bureaus are notified. We recommend waiting at least 3 months before applying for new credit to allow your credit score to recover.

Do I need a lawyer to get a clearance certificate?

No, you don't need a lawyer. Only a registered NCR debt counsellor can legally issue a clearance certificate, and Meerkat has registered debt counsellors on staff. If you still have active debt but are no longer over-indebted, we do have a legal process to help.
