Did you know that geysers are accountable for more than 50% electricity bill? This means your geyser is the most energy consuming item you own. Below are some tips to help reduce how much electricity your geyser consumes and in turn reduce your monthly electricity bill.

  1. Use an electric geyser

Studies have shown that an electric geyser uses less energy than a gas geyser. This means that an electric geyser is cheaper to maintain. The study conducted measured how much electricity used by both types of geysers in 24 hours. The gas geyser was shown to use more than R100 more in 24 hours than the electric geyser. This means you can save more than R3000 a month just by choosing the right type of geyser!

  1. Don’t switch off your geyser

There is a common misconception that switching off your geyser daily will save you money. This will work but if you are only switching it off for the day then this will not save you money. When your geyser is on, it will maintain a temperature at set-point, this means that the water will remain the same temperature when hot water from your taps are not being used. This allows no cold water to enter the geyser as the geyser contains a resistance that only allows cold water in when the water is not heated.

When your geyser is on, the resistance uses little energy to keep the water at set-point temperature. When you switch your geyser off, on the other hand, the resistance will use a huge amount of energy to warm the water back up to set-point temperature.

In reality, switching your geyser off, if it is only for the day, will not save you electricity or money because heating the water temperature up each day when you turn it on will consume more energy than if you leave the geyser on to maintain the water temperature.

  1. Geyser blanket

On average, a geyser can loose up to 1% of its heat per hour. A geyser blanket can cut this in half and make your geyser energy consumption less! The geyser blanket will reduce the heat loss of your geyser, saving you electricity and money.

These are some simple changes you can make to your daily life to save electricity by monitoring your geyser. They can help to reduce your monthly electricity bill and leave you with more money in your pocket.
